This is a story of a housewife frustrated with her life and all the restrictions imposed on her. The only respite she has is the radio that connects her to the outside world and helps her escape from reality for some time. She gradually gets drawn into this imaginary world of freedom and soon realizes that she doesn't want to go back to what was once her “home”. The film revolves around the life of Maithili, a housewife who is fed up with her life at home and decides to leave her village for the city. She wants to be free for once in her life and hence goes on to run away from her matrimonial home. She meets an old friend, Sandhu, who lives in some remote part of India. Impressed by Maithili's honesty and the simplicity of her lifestyle, he introduces her into his village where she meets engineer Raju Gopal Sharma alias Raja. Maithili used to live with Suhasi, who has now come back after marriage, but she does not have enough means to support them both. Raja is upset with his wife Sunita who is always busy with her social activities. As they spend time together, Raja gradually starts getting attracted to Maithili's simplicity and finally gets infatuated by her. But Maithili sees everything in a different perspective and does not feel the same way about him. As fate would have it, Raju Gopal Sharma meets the same Suhasi whom he had once proposed to before marriage. He proposes again to her, but this time she refuses him saying that she can't leave her husband who is suffering from cancer for him. However, Suhasi continues to remain in touch with Raja. Maithili's husband, on being tipped by her brother, goes to the village where she is supposed to be staying with Sandhu. The whole mess is sorted out and Maithili goes back with her husband. The film also features Madan Mohan, Rajni Talwar, Madhu Malhotra and Madan Puri. The movie had some good reviews but didn't do very well at the box office. The music was composed by Kalyanji Anandji and Lata Mangeshkar with lyrics by Minna-Mahendra. The film has been remade in Hindi as "Aurat Hamaara Hai", in Telugu as "Manchi Kutumbam", in Kannada as "Sangya Manidhargalu" and in Oriya as "Sathi Sulochana". This was the first movie of A.K.
