Sarbjit is a 2015 Indian historical action drama film directed and co-produced by Hansal Mehta. It explores the life of Sarabjit Singh, an Indian citizen imprisoned in Pakistan on suspicion of terrorism and later sentenced to death. The film was released worldwide on 29 November 2015cinemas. The film has received widespread critical acclaim upon release and has been box office success grossing ₹289 million (US$4 million) in India and $2 million internationally within two weeks of its release. The movie stars Randeep Hooda as Sarabjitt Singh, with the supporting cast including Adil Hussain, Manav Kaul, Arunoday Singh and Divya Dutta. In early 2014, the director Hansal Mehta came upon a story in The Times of India about Sarabjit Singh, a farmer from Bhikhiwind in the Punjab region, who was sentenced to death in Pakistan for allegedly being an Indian spy. Mehta felt that the story was "astonishing" and decided to develop a film with producer Viacom 18 Motion Pictures. He met Randeep Hooda prior to the development of the filmand the two agreed to work on a project together. Mehta approached Yaara Films founder Aamir Khan for help with the script development and Khan came on board as co-producer. Hansal Mehta and Humayun Saeed were briefly involved in the scripting of the film, before working together with Ahuja and Kaul. The script was then given to Shekhar Kapur, who made his first independent film as a director. Mani Ratnam was approached as a producer for help with the international distribution of the film but turned down participating in the venture. The movie is produced by Viacom 18 Motion Pictures and co-produced by Aamir Khan's production company Red Chillies Entertainment. It was filmed in Punjab and Himachal Pradesh and extensively used train travel throughout its filming. The budget of the film was ₹38 crore (US$5 million). It was released on 5 November 2015 in cinemas in India, with a portion in Punjabi, with English subtitles. The film featured in almost almost all the top 10 films at the box office on its release. The film is based on the true story of Sarabjit Singh (Randeep Hooda) during his 23 years in an Indian prison in Pakistan since 1990, when he was convicted of spying for India. It takes its title from his nickname "Sarbjit", meaning "victory" or "triumph". The film also depicts Sikhs living under Indian occupation throughout history. It shows how various Sikh leaders have been persecuted or killed by the Indian army. The film has received positive reviews from critics. On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, it holds a rating of 93%, based on 26 reviews, with an average rating of 7.6/10. "The Times of India" gave the movie 4 out of 5 stars, quoting that it is "an outright triumph in all spheres." The Hollywood Reporter stated that "Sarbjit is both an intelligent and timely film, and the kind that only the Indian industry can make."
